Aaargh! Why is it that so many people seem to believe that just because someone has done something first that automatically the market must be saturated. And yes, I get this question all the time:
‘I’m afraid to quit my job because and start selling online because there too many people selling and it feels saturated’.
I’ve been selling online for almost a decade, and I’m here to assure you that this is an industry that’s virtually impossible to “saturate.”
‘Is selling online saturated?’ is one of my most frequently asked questions.
Let me explain.
There are a bajillion people in the world. Approximately.
Okay, it’s really about 8 billion.
And admittedly, not every one of them is buying online. But you know what? A lot of them are.
Ready for me to go into teacher mode? Because I’m about to lay some statistics on you.
In 2016, 209.6 million people in the United States alone were online shoppers. That number is expected to climb to 230.5 million by 2021.
And considering that the total population of the U.S. is about 330 million…well, that roughly translates to 70% of Americans scrolling along, looking for products, wanting to spend their cold hard cash.
I know, I know: this doesn’t sound like one of my usual posts with all this numbers stuff, right? But when you realize how many shoppers there are, it kinda puts everything in perspective. Especially when you know that so, so, SO many of them aren’t one-timers. They’re visiting online stores all the time.
But there’s even more coolness I want to share with you…
..which is why I put together this video of a presentation I gave to a room full of people who are (you guessed it!) selling products online.
Long story short: the idea that selling online is saturated just isn’t true.
It’s an excuse used by people who are feeling fear about going after their dreams…and one that waaaaay too many people give to stomp all over other peoples’ dreams.
Here’s what I want you to know:
People value physical products.
They love the touch and the feel of them. They love getting a great deal on them.
Physical products make people feel good—it’s something they are excited to see arrive on their front step. (Seriously—aren’t you psyched to see the UPS or FedEx guy show up with a package? So are they!)
People also love to give physical products.
I mean, when’s the last time you handed someone a gift and watched their face light up when they unwrapped it?
It’s practically magic, right? As I mentioned in the video, when we gave our daughter her first phone on Christmas, she literally cried she was so excited. That made ME want to cry. Giving her that product made both of us feel good.
So if people are shopping online, they VALUE physical products, and they love to GIVE physical products…why shouldn’t YOU be the one to sell those products to them?
Yes, there are huge companies who are selling products online, like Amazon, Walmart, and Target—just to name a few. And while they deliver products, they don’t provide an experience.
If you were the one with an online store, delivering joy in a poly mailer or a box, think about how you could change that. Think about how you could add a little extra something to make opening that package even better. For me, it’s Laffy Taffy. For you, it could be a note, a shiny little freebie, a scavenger hunt for kids…whatever you come up with.
Aren’t you actually doing a disservice to those people who want to find that perfect something…but can’t because you’re not there to sell it to them?
